Who Invented The Socks?

Numerous eras had their types of socks and history, but the first to use them were Greeks. They used socks made from matted animal hair called 'piloi'. Basically, they were wrapping and tying animal fur around their feet. By the 8th century BC, socks were worn under sandals and had split toes in Ancient Greece.

To find the socks that resemble the garments we wear today, we need to go ahead, to the 2nd Century AD. Romans were creating their kind of fitted socks by sewing pieces of fabric together, they called them ‘undones’.

 The first knitted socks came up in the 4th and 5th centuries within the Egyptian Tombs.

Socks kept marching forward, and in the middle ages they became a status symbol. The use of leggings and stockings increased amongst men. Our daily wear socks have surely been through a lot!

How did they become so easy for us, if they were a luxury?

Mass production began with the invention of the knitting loom by William Lee in 1589, it gave us drastic differences and changes where socks were in glorious limelight. After the industrial revolution, huge woolen socks became cheap and easier to manufacture. Finally, the end of the 20th century brought technology and transformed our socks.
